On every swell that hits the western shores of Tahiti, the birds play around the breaking wave of Teahupoo. Whales, sea turtles, dolphins and sharks can also be seen very close to the break but never as close to the tubes as the birds. Sometimes they take a rest and sit on a piece of drifting wood until it gets sucked into the line-up. They wait until the log is about to go over the lip before finally flying off for another session. This photo was taken in April 1999, early in the morning as a lone bird headed for the wide-open tube just as the lip was about to explode onto the reef.
